Small Questoinaire!

We have a few questions for everyone, this will help us to better plan the off season training. These are from coach Bach.
  1. Are you participating in some sort of physical activity during the off-season?
  2. Expectations are that in 2009 we want to be in better physical shape, are they doing some cardio and strength workouts?
  3. Would you be interested in attending a scheduled team conditioning workout once a week?
  4. What nights are you available to workout? From what times?
  5. What would you be willing to spend?

Email the responses to me at tannisw@mts.net

Women tackle task of making league workUPDATED: 2008-08-25 02:48:46 MST

By JENNA MCMURRAY, SUN MEDIA

Calling all Calgary women -- well, the ones who aren't afraid to get a little muddy.
The Calgary Rockies, a local women's tackle football team, is convinced this is the year they can make an all-female league work in Western Canada.

"We want to get the word out about us so we can get more girls out to play, more teams started up and more sponsors to make it happen," said Rockies' quarterback Melissa Little.

"I'd love for it to get super big -- like the CFL."

Though the team has been around off-and-on for seven years, there's never been enough funding or interest to get it completely off the ground.

Little is confident that, by working with the Edmonton Storm, the Manitoba Fearless and a team from Red Deer currently in the works, games could become a more regular affair.

The team is open to females between the ages of 16 and 45 years old.

"There's a lot of women who would have loved to play football in high school but weren't allowed because it was only for boys," said Little.

"But we want them to know there is a place for them to play right here."

For more information on how to sponsor or get involved with the Calgary Rockies, visit www.calgaryrockiesfootball.com

Team Wind up

I understand soem of you did not get the email, Sorry abut that, I am going off the registration list.

Here is the info, we are going potluck!! True potluck brijng what you like, if we have 15 desserts or 15 salads, so be it!! See you there.

Wind-up – August 15th at Jana’s
2 Belcourt Bay @ 6pm
Bring your swimsuits and a towel if you want to swim

As for booze, I can’t imagine what my front lawn would look like if I offered to supply the liquor so I’ll ask people to bring whatever they want to drink. O-line – there will be a little something at the wind-up for you in this regard. Hey, there has to be some reward for not allowing your quarterback to be touched even once in three games when she’s not running with the ball.

Okay, so to get there – coming west down Portage Ave., keep going past Grace Hospital, turn left onto Rouge at the 7-11 across from the big Safeway, second stop sign is Sansome, turn right and then take first left on Whitegates. Belcourt is on your left and I’m in the gray house on the corner, red car in the driveway; coming around the perimeter, turn onto Portage going east, turn right at the YMCA on Bedson, second stop sign is Sansome, turn left and then right on Whitegates. Same as above after that.

If you are drinking, please don’t drive. Unfortunately, there are plenty of reminders in the paper lately about the potentially tragic consequences if you do.

Let me know if you can't make it, pass this on to evryone incase they didn't subscribe - Tannis, Tannisw@mts.net

We made it on to Football Canada's Newsletter!

MANITOBA FEARLESS TAKE ROAD TRIP TO ALBERTA

The Manitoba Fearless travelled to Edmonton, this past July to participate in an all female tackle football tournament. The Manitoba team consisted of 31 women and six coaches.
The Fearless beat Edmonton 13 – 6 in game one and Calgary 27 – 0 in game 2 before succumbing to an Alberta all star team 8 – 7.
This tournament was a first of its kind in Western Canada and there are plans to hold a similar tournament next year with more teams as female tackle football continues to grow. For more information concerning the Manitoba Fearless contact Tannis Wilson at tannisw@mts.net.

Fearless in the the News

Read all about the Manitoba Fearless in the Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg Free PressSportsFearless women blazing a trail
By: Ashley Prest

Updated: June 27, 2008 at 12:35 AM CDT

They're the Manitoba Fearless -- they'll run full speed into a tackler and compare bruises later but they're also going where women have never gone before in this province.

The Fearless are Manitoba's first tackle football team for women playing the same game, same rules, same crack back blocks as the men. After a long winter of workouts, the team will compete in the inaugural Western Canadian Women's Tackle Football Championship in Edmonton. The Fearless will meet the Edmonton Storm on Saturday and the Calgary Rockies on Monday in the three-team round-robin event at Clarke Stadium.

"It's what we're about, we've got T-shirts, 'Eat, Sleep, Breathe Football -- Live Fearlessly,'" said team founder Tannis Wilson, 40, a Fearless defensive lineman who grew up wanting to play tackle football but didn't have the chance.

"It is a dream come true, I've wanted to get this started for about five years now. It just seems to be the right time."

Wilson, whose father George is a former football coach and builder and brother Geordie is a former University of Manitoba player, has played flag football since she was a youngster and is a coach with the St. Vital Mustangs bantam team. When she started the Fearless last fall, she found out there were at least 30 other females aged 16 to 44 who also wanted to play tackle football.

One of those players is linebacker Allyssa Buckland, the team's second most experienced player at just 16 because she played five years of tackle football with boys in the Manitoba Minor Football Association. Allyssa went ahead and recruited her mom Sharon, a 40-yaer-old rookie defensive back.

"I really thought it would be a great way to do something with my mom and football is such an awesome game, I just wanted to share it with her," said Allyssa, who is also playing women's rugby. "It's been fun, I try to help her out when I can. We study our playbooks together."

Sharon said football was great experience for Allyssa but by last year, when she was a 15-year-old midget player, some of the other players were growing into the 200-pound range.

"I'd like to see this continue because it will allow these girls some place to keep playing," Sharon said. "I never thought of playing before, it took a little convincing but I really thought it was something I just had to try."

Wilson said the Fearless met last week in their locker-room, provided by the St. Vital Mustangs football club, to watch a DVD of the last game between Edmonton and Calgary.

"It was awesome! We had the cooler in there, and of course because we're women someone made cookies, we're sitting around watching football game film in our uniforms!" Wilson said.

The trip will cost each player about $1,000, including the purchase of a jersey while other equipment has been loaned to the Fearless by the Mustangs, East Side Eagles, North Winnipeg Nomads and the provincial under-17 team.

"Don't let anyone or anything stop you from living your dream," Wilson said. "I'm 40 and I've wanted to play since I was nine years old. I've had to wait for a considerable amount of time but you can't give up on your dream."

Players learned fundamentals and tactics from an experienced head coach -- Craig Bachynski, Football Manitoba's technical director and a former provincial team coach. Wilson said the hope is that a women's tackle football league can be started within the next three to five years.

Fair-play rule means equal time for all

The Manitoba Minor Football Association has a fair-play rule in the terminator (ages 7-8) through bantam (age 14) divisions. The rule states all players, regardless of gender, get equal playing time in their positions. If two players shared a position, each would play half the game. It has been in place for some time but more strictly enforced in the past four years.

"It's an actual bylaw within the MMFA," said Tannis Wilson, vice-president of marketing for Football Manitoba, women's tackle football co-ordinator and Manitoba Fearless player. "As much as the perception is that it's a male game, in football, no females have been discriminated against. As long as they could perform to the same level that anybody else on the team could, they're part of the team."

Practice attendance

Ladies,

Due to a general lack of consistant practice attendance we need to know today whether you will be at the remaining practices and therefore joining us in Edmonton.

A lack of commitment by some people makes it hard on the rest of the team. It is hard to practice when we are missing 8-10 people. We need everyone to make it to the remaining practices in order for us to be ready to play in Edmonton.

I am paying for the jerseys today and will have to pay for our rooms in Edmonton on Monday. Do we want to pay for people that are not showing up? If we do the team eats it and the people that attend regualarly and work hard at fund raising suffer. That isn't fair.

We want YOU to be a part of the team but everyone has to make the same commitnent to attend practice regularly. We understand that people have other commitments in life but it would be courteous to let someone know if you will not be attending practice.

I will not be ordering jersey or booking space in Edmonton for people that do not attend practice. You all know who you are.

Thanks

Tannis, who spend hours everyday on this team
The Coaches that give up their time for us every week
The team that has put in their time, effort and $$ to make this first ever team a uccess

Bomber Game Recruitment/ Display Opportunity

Stroke of Luck!!

We have been given the opportunity to strut our stuff at the Bomber game June 19th. We will not be playing at half time but we have been given the opportunity to do some recruiting pre game.

This has come about because of the venue change at the Women's Day, Pigskin Plus.

The venue change was great for us, but they are giving us another opportunity to talk to the Bomber fans about our programs.

If anyone will be attending the game already and would like to help out please let me know. I don't think we will be given any tickets to the game but I will check it out. The girls that put in the time originally will be give the first chance is there are tickets.

T

*** Wednesdays Practice Location has been changed!!

Please note, Wednesdays practice has been moved back to Tec Voc. Time still the same 7-9 PM.

Please bring your garage sale items to Wednesday's practice

Also please bring your extra social tickets to practice as there are people still looking for tickets to sell

If you have a social prize please bring it Wednesday as the social is Saturday and we need to put the packages together.

For Wednesday please let us know if you will be able to work at the garage sale and or the social. We will be putting together a schedule for both. You need to work at least one!

Flag Football

Now that Tackle football is well on it's way it's time to get our flag program up and running for year number two.

If you or any one you know is interested in playing send me an email and I will put you on my list.

For a team you need 8-10 players. It is a passing catching game so all you non ball touching types get a chance to actually catch a ball during a game.

See link for more on the rules of flag football. There are a few different rules in the women's game but this will give you the general idea.

Great Practice!!

Wow, last night was fun!! It was great spending individual time in my position. Scary though, it just shows us how much we have to learn.

If you know anyone that wasn't at practice yesterday please encourage them to sign up for blog notifications so we don't have a repeat performance of last night. Sorry to the girls that went to Tec Voc.

Also please encourage everyone to come to practice next week. We need to be at all of the practices from now on if we are going to be able to compete in July!!

It will take every practice to learn what we need to know and even longer to get really good at it.

Can't wait to see everyone in equiptment. See everyone at practice next week, I will be uploading the video from big breakfast this week as well. If anyone has video footage of any of the other interviews get them to me and I will up load them to the blog.

Have a great week

Practice Location Has Changed for this Week!!

Unfortunately we do not have the gym at Tec Voc this week. Sorry for the late notice but I was waiting to hear if we could use the other gym, not go!!

We will be practicing at College Beliveau, 296 Speers Rd in Windsor park. click on the title to see a map.

Easiest way to get to the school is east on Cottonwood then north on Speers, it is behind Windsor Park Collegiate.

Call me if you are lost, 228-9040.

Please be there ready to practice at 8PM sharp as we need to clear the gym at 9:45.

Again sorry for the late notice, but sometimes stuff happens!

As not everyone has signed up to get the updates from the blog please forward this on to as many players as you can.

The coffee orders will be there tomorrow.

Women's Shoulder pads!!

DOUGLAS introduces: ZENA the first Woman's Specific Shoulder Pads with the patented breast plate assembly.

Note: Not available for all players. Women under 120 lbs should were the junior pads this year

DOUGLAS has incorporated the same Air-Management (see note), protective properties in the "ZENA" series that has made DOUGLAS the leader in the professional and collegiate ranks. The "patented" breast plate assembly allows a fit for all players, and are adjustable up and down. The anatomically designed pads specifically contour to fit a woman's body. It is important that women athletes understand they now have a "choice" in innovative shoulder pad protection other than those available in the industry. Needed to order shoulder pads are a players height, weight, position and bra cup size.

Oreintation Night for Manitoba Football Women

Wow, what a great start. We had 25 eager women out to our orientation last night. It was amazing; if I am not mistaken our age range was 16-43 with the average about 30.

I had close to 20 people RSVP that they couldn’t attend the orientation but were interested in giving it a go. Even this morning I was getting emails from girls that are interested but couldn’t make it out last night.

The only downer was getting an email from my Edmonton contact this morning telling me that he read the CFL schedule wrong and the Bombers are not playing in Edmonton that weekend at all. CRAP!!

Here are a few pictures from last night’s event.

Our lovely attendees!

Wednesday night

Well the day is almost here. One more sleeps. Good news I have two more possible sponsors lined up. I will tell you about them once they are all firmed up.

Gena at Football Manitoba sent out an email yesterday to over 1000 Football Manitoba members, shortly after that we had 53 hits on the blog! How awesome, just as I thought there really is an interest in women playing football in Manitoba.

Our coaches are all now in place, you will meet them tomorrow.

PS if you want to get updates emailed to you click on the orange feed button at the top of the blog, and then every time I update the blog you will be notified.

See you all tomorrow, don’t forget to vote on the team name or email me new suggestions.

We want the world to know we mean business, and that women can and will play football. See you soon, I am soooooooo excited!

PS our newest coach addition is Bobby Dyce, Winnipeg Blue Bomber receiver coach. AWESOME!
