SWEDEN TO HOST INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Stockholm will welcome six teams from around the world to the Zinkensdamms IP Stadium when history is made on the gridiron from June 26 to July 4, 2010
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2009 - PARIS, FRANCE - The world's best female American Football players will converge on Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, for the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women's World Championship in the summer of 2010.
Having announced its intention to host a championship caliber tournament for women at the 12th annual IFAF Congress this past summer, the sport's international governing body has confirmed June 26 though July 4 as the dates when elite female athletes will compete in Sweden for the world title.
"Women's tackle football is growing steadily in popularity and there is definitely enthusiasm among players for an international competition of the highest quality," said IFAF President TOMMY WIKING, who is also the President of the Swedish American Football Federation (Svenska Amerikansk Fotbollsförbundet). "IFAF and its federations will become stronger through participating in competitions, so we expect this world championship to be another positive step forward."
All games will be played at the Zinkensdamms IP Stadium in Stockholm and each team may enter a 45-player roster. The six teams will be divided into two groups of three and will play a round-robin tournament with the group winners qualifying for the Gold Medal Game, the second placed teams meeting for the Bronze Medal and the third placed teams for fifth place.
Several countries have expressed an interest in entering from countries where women's tackle football is currently played, including Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Venezuela and the United States. The six participating teams will be announced on December 1.
Teams are scheduled to arrive in Stockholm on Saturday, June 26, and the first games will be played on the following day, Sunday, June 27. Alternate rest and game days will follow before the Gold and Bronze Medal games take place on Saturday, July 3.
