Fwd: Special Thank You from the Iowa Crush: Please forward on!

Manitoba Fearless players, coaches, and staff,
As a team, the Iowa Crush would like to send a big thank you for hosting the International Challenge Game between our teams.  We appreciated the hospitality and sportsmanship you exhibited while we were there. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to play you all and see how much you have grown as a team.  It was quite the challenge to learn the Canadian rules, but we all enjoyed the challenge and it gave us a new perspective of the game.  We hope to continue this tradition of playing each other in years to come and hope we can give you the same warm welcome next year in Iowa.  We look forward to hosting you all.
Thank you for the great experience!

Last Night's Practice

Hello Ladies,

Last night there were 10 gals at practice. I was informed by 4 players that they will not be there. That leaves alot of Ladies that didn't let the team know they would not be there. We need to have the commitment from you all that you are planning to finish out our season with the upcoming game in July. The coaches and your teammates need to know when you are not going to be at practice so if the numbers are ever that low again, the girls who did show up could plan something else for the evening. As we have said before we understand that family and work come first, but it is your responsiblity to let Tannis know(Zueff in her absence) that you won't be there. Please feel free to call me if you are not sure you are wanting to continue this season or if there is anything else we can do get you back at practice. We just need to be sure that there is nothing holding you back from coming out and that we can be confident we will have enough players to Host the Crush. Again, my # is 995-8287 to let me know you won't be at practice, or if you want to discuss anything. Please remeber our coaches are donating thier time to help us play the game we love, let's show them we appreciate it by showing our commitment to learning from them.

Thank you,

National Fearless Send off Social

Hello all! Just a reminder that all Fearless members are responsible to sell 5 tickets to the Social on the 11th, at St.Vital Mustangs club house. We are a team and must all chip in for fundraisers in order to ensure the team is a success and in order to keep down registration costs. The following players are missing either their Tickets or prize and a teammate will be calling to arrange the pick up of tickets or drop off of a prize.

Ivonne, Valerie, Blue, Alyssa, Dandy, Patty, Amanda, Kim, Tiff, Giselle, Jess, Chels, Jenny, Maria, Shirin, And Pam.

This is a huge list of people and we really need to pull together as a team on this ladies.

Thank you,

JPD stands for junior player development and it is a program that
Football Manitoba puts on free every year for new players aged 11-14.

It is basically an introduction to football and it walks the players
through each position on the field. The program is meant to help kids
that start football a bit later "catch up" to the kids that have been
playing for awhile.

They are looking for people to help out coaching these kids. This is a
perfect opportunity for us to get out there an help the football
community and learn a bit more ourselves.

JPD runs mon-thur starting June 7th. You are not required to commit to
the entire three weeks but if you could commit to 1-2 days each week
that would be awesome. We are off the first week so even a couple of
days that week would be great.

Let's show them that women are playing football in Manitoba and we are
here to stay out there and in the meantime help Football Manitoba with
one of there flagship programs.

FYI, Footbal Manitoba supplies us with our game pants socks and pays
for our coaches insurance and coaches clothing. They help us out, now
let's help them (and learn a lot while we are at it).

Wilson Fearless about future - Winnipeg Free Press

Wilson Fearless about future - Winnipeg Free Press

Tannis Wilson has dreamt of playing tackle football all her life.
Now, after playing only one home game, her career is over.

Four years ago Wilson began building the Manitoba Fearless women's tackle football team. Although the Fearless have played numerous games outside Manitoba, Wilson and her team had never played in Winnipeg, until Saturday, when they took the field in front of a moderate gathering of rain-soaked home-town fans at the East Side Eagles Field.

Ironically, the game, a 26-8 loss to the Edmonton Storm, was Wilson's first home game and last game as a player.

"I have dreamt of playing tackle football all my life, but I truly never believed that I would have the opportunity to play the game I love in front of my friends and family," Wilson, 42, said Saturday.

"After three years of regular practice and a few games, I have decided to hang up my cleats, but I will continue with the team as general manager."

Christina Goulet scored three times for the Storm on runs of 25, 20 and 30 yards while Kora-Lea Hooker returned a punt for the other Edmonton major.

Charlene Mash-Hadlow scored Manitoba's lone touchdown with a one-handed grab of a 20-yard pass from Jana Taylor. Manitoba got two points on a conceded safety touch.

The score was not indicative of the Fearless' calibre of play said Wilson, who pointed to nine teammates who will be part of Team Canada at the World championship tournament this June in Stockholm. "Defensive lineman Katherine Calancia broke her leg at the tryout camp, but she still made the team, but eventually ended up getting a blood clot in her leg after that, and that took her out of the running."

Fearless players who will join Wilson with the national team in Sweden are: Mash-Hadlow, receiver; Amy Mohr, receiver; Andrea Weichel, linebacker; Jessica McCreary, offensive line; Carol Whitman, defensive line; Taylor, quarterback; Christine O'Donnell, offensive line.
"I will be coaching the defensive line for the national team in Sweden," said Wilson, who coached minor football for six years with the St. Vital Mustangs.

"This wasn't the outcome that we wanted," Wilson said of their loss, "but we went out there, we played hard, and we had an injury in the first quarter which had a direct impact on the game. This is only the beginning for women's football in Manitoba."

Wilson said that the tournament in Sweden is the World Championship of Women's Tackle Football, and is part of the International Federation of American Football.

"Sweden and Finland often play each other, but Sweden is the stronger of the teams," she said. "Austria and Germany play against each other too, and then there is the U.S."

Wilson said Team Canada will spend four days in St. John's, Nfld, at a training camp so that they can get used to American football rules, which will be in effect.

"We're ranked No. 2 going into the tournament, but the way that they rank it is they go by the number of people in the country playing football," she explained. "The Americans have, like, 51 semi pro-teams.

"We play our first game against Sweden, then Germany on Canada Day, and when we win our pool, we will play the United States on Independence Day."

Home at last for Fearless road warriors

by Avi Saper

Talk about a long road home. Finally, in its third year of existence, the Manitoba Fearless women’s tackle football team will play a game in their home province.

The Fearless, which includes 29 players from Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie ranging in age from 16 to 47, will host the Edmonton Storm at East Side Eagles Field on May 29 at 2 p.m.

For a team that only played a three-game tournament in Edmonton in its first year and an exhibition game in Duluth, Minn., in its second season, having a bona fide home game is a major deal.

First and foremost, Fearless players are hoping the local contest will raise the club’s profile.

"Some high school coaches don’t even know we exist when we call to see if there might be some girls interested in playing," said Lisa Cummings, the team’s 35-year-old centre from Garden City.

"With people actually being able to see that the game is no different than when guys are playing — it’s just as intense, hard-hitting and fast — we’ll hopefully get the word out that we are around."

Like the vast majority of the players on the inaugural Fearless squad in 2008, the closest Cummings had previously come to football was as a spectator.

She took up the sport at the same time as her eight-year-old son and quickly fell in love. Even showing up at her financial workplace with bruises up and down her arms or on crutches hasn’t slowed Cummings down.

"I had a little bit of apprehension," she said. "I wasn’t 19 anymore, but getting the opportunity to try it… it would have been giving up a lot to not give it a go."

Charlene Mash-Hadlow, 42, was no stranger to intense competition, having played basketball for the University of Manitoba. The idea of full-fledged tackle football immediately struck her fancy.

"I generally like aggressive sports, so tackle football was quite appealing," said the wide receiver from St. Vital.

At first, the focus was on the basics. As Cummings put it, "it was like coaching eight-year-olds" for coach Craig Bachynski, who has since been succeeded by first-year head coach Dan Washnuk.

"They had to tell us what a thigh pad was, or a tail pad. We had no idea," Cummings recalled.

With most of the team now consisting of veterans, the Fearless have turned their attention to expanding the team’s playbook and running more complicated schemes.

The players are also committed to expanding the sport locally as well as globally. Nine members of the team, including Mash-Hadlow, were selected to play for Team Canada at the inaugural World Women’s Tackle Football Championship in Stockholm in July.

"It’s a huge honour to be part of the (national team) program," Mash-Hadlow said. "When I heard there was an opportunity to try out for Team Canada, I was extremely excited and couldn’t wait."

Meanwhile, on the home front, Cummings and her teammates would like to see more options for young girls to play tackle football. The local clubs all have female players, but most drop out around age 11 or 12 when the size gap between the boys and girls becomes too big.

"We’re trying to promote a six-man league for girls 11 to 15 to play in," Cummings said. "We’re hoping to get some of the major clubs involved.

"There should be no sports out there that should be only one sex. Anyone can do anything they put their mind to."

Tickets for the Fearless vs. the Storm are $5 each, and free for children under 12.

Girls, please make sure you have you stuff, jersey, pants, belt, socks, cleats, pads and helmet.

My family never ceases to amaze me

My mom and dad, who have given me amazing support throughout my
journey of creating, running and playing with team Fearless, found out
that we had to pay for the field this weekend.

Without hesitation they have offered to pay. I told them no, but they

My family as some of you may know have been involved with football for
some time. Most recently my dad and his team, the St Vital Bulldogs we
inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall Of Fame as well as the St Vital
Mustangs Hall of Fame for winning three national titles in four years.
He sat as a board member of football Canada and the President of
Football Manitoba for many years. Along with coaching, managing,
administrating and starting up leagues. He was at football practice
when both my brother and I were born, seriously.

My mom, she was just always there. In the canteen, washing and
repairing uniforms, housing players and supporting "the football" that
happened in our house. Not to mention the hundreds of football games
she had to endure.

Well for the last of her kids games she decided to once again support
the football team and will pay for our field. For something that I
love. They believe in the cause, they believe we are worthy of their

My immediate family helping out my extended family. I feel truly

Please, each one of you that have the support of your families, the
ones that travel to watch you play, that drive you to practice, that
watch your kids while you are at football, that appreciate the effort
you put in to be who you are, give them a hug an say thanks. We
wouldn't be here without them.

Sorry for the rambling on but I wanted everyone to know how lucky I
feel to have been able to live my dream and help a bunch of you
realize yours.

Most of you are aware this is my last game this weekend. I will
continue on running the team but my body is getting less and less
forgiving. It has been an honour and a pleasure playing with each and
everyone of you, even OD when she kicks my ass. :)

Tomorrow we become real in the eyes of our community. They get to see
who we are and what we have worked so hard to become. Let's show them
who we are and what we are made of. Three years and it is finally
here. Let's do ourselves proud. Let's leave it all on the field. WE

Thank you.

Don't forget to tune your radios to CJOB at 11. Carol and Tannis will
be guests on the Richard Cloutier show talking about womens football
and our game tomorrow.

First ever all women's tackle football game in Manitoba

It has been 4 years since I started building the Manitoba Fearless and believe it or not we are three days away from our first ever home game.

I have dreamt of playing tackle football all my life but I truly never believed that I would have the opportunity to play the game I love in front of my friends and family. This Saturday at 2PM at the East Side Eagles (723 London in East Kildonan) I will be playing my first home game at the same time it will be my last game. After three years of regular practice and a few sporadic games I have decided to hang up my tackle football cleats (I will be continuing with the team as General Manager).

I hope to share this day with all of you as you come out and support the movement of women's football in Manitoba. The Manitoba Fearless are one of the strongest women's programs in Canada even though we have had limited game experience, this can be seen in the 8 women that will be representing us at the world championship this June in Stockholm Sweden, the second highest number of women from one team. We are strong contenders with a dedicated group of athletes and coaches.

Community support is what will keep this program growing and thriving; we hope that the Manitoba Fearless will be the pinnacle to which young girls in Manitoba can strive for as they mature through our community and high school programs.

Please come out this weekend and support me in my last game of football and the first of many home games for the Manitoba Fearless.

Dress Fearlessly !

Well it's that time of year again. Time to get ready to look like a pro when we travel. We are planning to put in a clothing order, but in order to get pricing we need to know how many would be interested in clothing this season. We are getting pricing for Windbreaker style track suits in black, T-shirts, and black straight leg sweats. Please send me an e-mail stating which items you would be interested in so we can get an estimate on how much we will be ordering(We get better pricing if we have a larger order)
I can be reached at

Thanks Ladies!

Salisbury Morse Place School practice on Wednesday.

The school is located at 795 Prince Rupert, at the corner of London and Prince Rupert. It is located about 3 blocks south of Kildonan East/Eagles field. We will be able to park at the parking lot that runs parallel to London. Doors we will be using are near the north end of the parking lot. I'd like the chalk talks to go from 7:30 - 9:00. Thanks

Fundraising Opportunity

So we mentioned it, now we want to know who is interested. The Fundraising from this will go directly to your personal travel fund. The more you sell the less you pay. The Sobeys cards work as follows

We get 10% of all sales. If you sell $1,000.00 worth of gift cards, your accommodations are paid for. You sell more than that, we will give you the cash to offset your flight cost.

There will be a short turnaround time on this because all money has to be paid before Sobeys hands out the cards. We don't want people to have to wait for their cards. We would sell for 2 weeks only.

We must sell $25,000.00 in order to do this fundraiser. Please e-mail me to let me know if you will be interested. If we have enough players interested we will go ahead with it.

Thank you,

Calgary Plans

Hello Ladies,

So the Hotel is booked and we are ready to go! We are staying at the Travelodge Calgary Macleod Trail. Included in our stay is a continental Breakfast and Water and snacks in the room.
I am attaching the link to the hotel website.

Feel free to check out what's nearby using Google Maps and checking out the street view. Anyone arriving earlier than the 21st, please contact me as you will get our group rate if you arrive earlier.

We were given a special from the hotel with the Shuttle company from the airport. The rate has been dropped from $35 a person to $10 a person. Please let me know if you will want the shuttle as I will have to book it under our group for you.

I have done some budgeting for the trip and with 3 nights accommodations and Vehicle Rental we are looking at $100 - $110 per person. This must be paid up by May 7th. We will be paying for the Hotel via Team Cheque. Please budget yourself to ensure you are paid up by the 7th.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns,

Prizes, shifts and tickets, Oh My!

Hello Fearless Ladies,

Again a reminder to bring in either your prize or $20 toward purchasing prizes for the auction on Saturday at the Bud Spud.

AS well, I am putting together the schedule for shifts(1/2 hour increments) at the Bud Spud. I need Auction Ticket Sellers, Door ticket takers, and 50/50 sellers. I will also need a couple people to come at 4:00 to help with the set up of the auction. We would like to pair up some rookies with some vets if possible. Let me know if you have a preferred time you would like to work, otherwise I will slot you in somewhere.

E-mail me at with your preferred working time.

As the previous post says...sell sell sell, but if you can please bring in all sold ticket money and let us know on Wednesday if you sold tickets you are positive the people bought just to support but won't attend, we need to give a guarantee to the Pal and I don't want to Guarantee to high(we'd have to pay for uneaten steaks if we over guarantee)

See you on Wednesday!!!

Important info for Tonight's Practice

Team Registration - We need to make sure everyone is brining in their registration fees. We need to budget the season and until we know how many are paid up and on our roster we can't do so. If you are having difficulty coming up with the money please speak with Karen or Zueff at practice in confidence.

Bud Spud - Please ensure you have picked up your 1st 6 tickets as it is a team requirement to sell at least 6 tickets. The more you sell, the less you pay to travel. As well, as you sell your tickets please bring in the money as you collect it.

Bud Spud prizes - Please start brining in your Prizes so that we aren't rushing to get them collected last minute.

Travel to Calgary - If you are not planning to travel to Calgary you can still be part of Team Fearless when we play at home. However, we will need to know your plans as to if you are traveling or not and how you will be traveling. There have been many seat sales lately and flights can be found for $235 return if you are looking for them. The Coaches are going to need a firm commitment on who is traveling in order to plan their strategies.

Alot of information for tonight but we need to have committed #'s in order to plan for Calgary and the game/games in Winnipeg. If you are not going to be at practice and still need to get your Bud Spud Tickets please e-mail so we can arrange for you to get your tickets!

New Decade, New Head Coach

First off HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

After two exciting years at the helm of the Manitoba Fearless, coach Bach finally realized he was too busy to put in a third year as head coach.

So I am excited to announce that Coach (Cowboy) Dan has agreed to take over the reins as the Head Coach of a bunch of Fearless ladies.

(Bach will be staying on as a positional coach.)

On to the game!!!

We will be starting practice Wednesday January 13th @ 7:30, and then every Wednesday there after!!

I will get he school address up here ASAP.

Bring your runners, shirt, shorts and chequebook.

Please bring anyone that you think may be interested in playing!!
